Study Physical Therapy in United States . . .

The USA has the world’s largest international student population from all over the world. India ranks first in number of students coming to USA for pursuing higher education in the world.

The United States has one of the world’s finest university systems, with outstanding programs in virtually all fields. The United States has 168 universities in the world's top 500, 17 of which are in the top 20. We look forward to helping students who, like you, are considering continuing your PHYSICAL THERAPY education in the UNITED STATES. At the graduate level, students have the opportunity to work directly with some of the well renowned therapists, with the chance to become involved with exclusive research and educational opportunities. Graduating from an accredited American school and being exposed to the rigors of the American education system is an investment in your future.

Key points before dreaming about studying in USA:

  • What you want to do?? Pursue good education in physical therapy or just want to enter United States
  • Be determined and focused on your goal of coming to USA
  • Start your preparation well in advance (mostly by 2nd Year of BPT)
  • Plan your journey right from dreaming about USA to reaching USA in small steps rather than thinking too much (Take things one at a time)
  • NOTE: You can’t practice as a physical therapist without clearing National Physical Therapy Licensure Examination (NPTE)

Which Degrees you can look for . . .

  Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT):

The DPT degree supports the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Vision 2020 stating that "By 2020, physical therapy will be provided by physical therapists who are doctors of physical therapy, recognized by consumers and other health care professionals as the practitioners of choice to whom consumers have direct access for the diagnosis of, interventions for, and prevention of impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities related to movement, function, and health."

There are two type of DPT Degrees:

a) Entry-Level DPT:

  • The entry-level DPT Program is designed for individuals just entering the field of physical therapy.
  • This three year program prepares students holding a bachelor’s degree in a field other than physical therapy to become a licensed physical therapist.
  • As we from India do have a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy, we are not eligible for entry-level DPT.

b) Transitional DPT:

  • The transition DPT is intended for practicing clinicians and typically offers a didactic and, in some cases, a clinical augmentation that is deemed necessary to meet current and future expectations for physical therapy practice.
  • This augmentation (knowledge, skills, and behaviors) is defined by the difference in content between a practicing clinician's entry-level education (whatever the year of graduation) and current entry-level education that has not been otherwise acquired through continuing education or specialization.
  • Several universities offer post-professional transition DPT programs. Most of these are completed in one to two years of part-time, online study.
  • It requires Licensure for us to be eligible for transitional DPT.

♥ Ph.D. in Physical Therapy or Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences:

  • It is designed to prepare rehabilitation scholars.
  • Students are given the opportunity to develop skills in teaching, research, service leadership, and interdisciplinary teamwork in rehabilitation science.
  • Students design their own specialty area within the broad categories of movement dysfunction, communication neuroscience, social and behavioral integration, or a related area of emphasis consistent with the student's career goals.
  • Most of the students complete it in four to five years of full-time study and will be well positioned for opportunities in education, research, and management in acedemic settings.
  • Couple of years of experience will increase chance of getting admission.

♥ Master of Science in Physical Therapy or Rehabilitation Sciences:

  •  Recently most of the universities are converting their Master of Science programs into DPT programs and chances of getting into Master's program in Physical Therapy are very less.
  • At this point very few universities do provide these programs but they will also be soon converted into DPT programs.

♥ Master of Sciences in Other Related Fields:

            a) Master of Science in Motor Control:

  • Motor control is concerned with the mechanisms involved in performing coordinated movements. Leading questions and explanations arise from studies on coordination.
  • Understanding how people are able to move their arms through space to be at the right place at the right time to execute a coordinated action is still meager.

   b) Master of Science in Biomechanics:

  • Biomechanics is the scientific study of humans and objects as they move and interact with the environment.
  • The program places an emphasis on research and laboratory experiences and demands mastery of advanced technology to solve movement-based problems.

   c) Master of Science in Exercise Physiology or Exercise Science:

  • Exercise Physiology is the scientific study of how the various physiological systems of the humans and animals respond to physical activity.

  • This program trains individuals for careers in scientifically based exercise programs for research, health maintenance, cardiac risk identification, and rehabilitation.

   d) Master of Science in Respiratory Care:

  • Respiratory therapists work in cooperation with physicians to care for patients with a wide range of breathing disorders including asthma, emphysema, pneumonia and lung infections, cystic fibrosis and breathing difficulties due to premature birth.
  • Respiratory therapists may work in a variety of settings from hospitals to home health care agencies and from outpatient centers and physicians offices to sleep disorder clinics.

University Selection . . .

Now you might be clear of what you want to do depending on previous two goals. So next step is to search for universities providing courses which matches to your area of interest.

Keys points to bear in mind while short listing universities:

  • Select universities which provides programs in which you are interested.
  • Make a list of 10 universities and then short list them to 5 universities to which you would like to apply. Do not rely on applying to only 1 or 2 universities rather than apply for at least 5 universities.
  • Explore faculty members Curriculum Vitae and look for their research areas and select those universities with faculty members doing research in your interested area. This is most important as most of these degrees are THESIS oriented (i.e., research based).
  • Keep in mind the cost of universities and your financial background also. As university ranking increases there tution fees will also increase.
  • If you are planning to continue after completing your master's in some related fields to DPT then try to take admission for Master's in universities which has t-DPT program so that it would be easy to get admission in the same university after your Master's.
  • University ranking will also play a role in getting Student VISA. Better the university rank, better would be your chance of getting VISA. So try to find a decent ranked university. You can find the university rank at University Rankings.
  • Don't make decisions for university selection quickly without having clear idea of different research opportunities and your area of interest but take your time and try to exlpore all universities before short listing 5 universities otherwise it would be waste on time and money.
  • Try to match yours research area of interest related to physical therapy, an average ranked university and last but important cost.

Preparing for TOEFL iBT . . .

The TOEFL Internet-based test emphasizes integrated skills and measures all four language skills, Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking. Each of the four language skills are reported on a scale of 0 to 30. There will also be a total score of 120. The TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is designed to measure the English-language ability of people who do not speak English as their first language and who plan to study at colleges and universities with English as the primary medium of communication. TOEFL is accepted by more institutions than any other English-language test in the world — including the top colleges and universities. For the latest updates on rules and requirements, it is best to consult the official website of ETS, the makers of the TOEFL at www.ets.org/toefl

The TOEFL iBT is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours long, and is divided into four sections:

  • The first section is READING, which lasts about 60-90 minutes. - This section measures your ability to read and understand short passages that you are likely to encounter in North American universities and colleges. You are required to answer questions about the reading passages provided in this section and the time available is up to 90 minutes depending upon the number of questions to be answered.
  • The second section is LISTENING, which lasts from 60-90 minutes. This section measures your ability to understand spoken English and you answer up to 50 questions using headphones to listen to taped conversations and talks. You have up to 90 minutes to complete this section and note taking is allowed.
  • You have a 10-minute BREAK.
  • The third section is SPEAKING, which is the shortest, about 20 minutes. - There are six speaking tasks on the TOEFL iBT. On two of these tasks, called Independent Speaking Tasks, you will be asked to express an opinion on a topic that you are familiar with. The remaining four tasks are called Integrated Speaking Tasks where you will be given information, either written, spoken, or both, about a topic. Then you will be asked to speak for up to 60 seconds about the topic. You have up to 20 minutes to complete this section and for all the tasks you will be given up to 30 seconds to prepare your response before speaking.
  • The last section is WRITING, for which you have about 60 minutes. - This section tests your ability to write in English. This section is split into two tasks, one integrated task where you are asked to write based on what you read you and hear, and an independent task where you need to generate ideas on a topic and provide supporting examples or evidence in a clear and grammatically correct manner.
